The PhD Program in “Regional Science and Economic Geography” is a unique multidisciplinary program in the field, meant to train and make students capable of pursuing autonomous, high-level, and original research that contributes to personal/societal wellbeing by promoting regional and local development. It is intended for students from different backgrounds, including applied economists, economic geographers, and sociologists. Based at the GSSI Social Science Unit, the research themes of the PhD program include, among the other, migration (both voluntary and forced), regional resilience (both in peripheral areas and cities), innovation (knowledge, human capital, creativity, entrepreneurship) and the informal economy. The methodological perspective in research and teaching is multidisciplinary in nature, with a combination of approaches relating to the economy of the territory, regional sciences, economic and human geography. Internship program opportunities have been established with the OECD and the European Commission and several collaborations exist with foreign universities (including with the London School of Economics).
